Noel and Eileen O’Donnell, devoted members of the Good Shepherd Parish community, were recently honored with the prestigious Dempsey Medal during a special Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral. Awarded by the Archbishop of Sydney, the medal acknowledges their exceptional contributions and unwavering commitment to serving the community.
When asked about their feelings upon receiving the medal, Noel and Eileen expressed immense pride and honor.
We never thought that we would receive anything like this. We felt very proud and honored to be selected by the Archbishop of Sydney to receive the Dempsey Medal.
Noel and Eileen’s connection with the church goes back to their younger years. Both were raised as Catholics and attended Catholic schools. They have been members of the Good Shepherd Parish community for 24 years, during which they actively participated in various roles and committees, including the parish council, financial committee, anniversary committee, and building committee. Eileen has been a catechist and served as the treasurer at the Good Shepherd Conference of the St Vincent de Paul Society. Noel, in addition to his involvement in different committees, served as an acolyte and made hospital visits to administer communion to the sick.
Their service to the community spans over 38 years, starting with their involvement in the parish at Regents Park before joining the Good Shepherd Parish. Prior to retiring Noel worked part time with the St Vincent de Paul Society and upon retirement 16 years ago, he has dedicated his full-time attention to the society. Together, Noel and Eileen have assisted countless families in need, providing food, clothing, and financial support. Home visits have been their primary focus, averaging 20 to 30 visits per month. During Christmas, they distribute hampers, with the help of local school donations, to around 140 families.
Noel and Eileen expressed their gratitude to the schools, the parish, and fellow volunteers who have supported their efforts. They believe that their work is guided by a higher purpose.
We’re doing God’s work. He gave us the courage to go out and do volunteering work and to support people.
Reflecting on their long years of service, Noel and Eileen acknowledged the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Unable to visit homes due to safety restrictions, they adapted their approach by leaving food vouchers in letterboxes and connecting with families through phone calls. Despite the challenges, they remained dedicated to their cause.
When asked about their most cherished experiences in their years of service, Eileen fondly recalled her time working in a high school library for 20 years, while Noel expressed joy in witnessing the smiles on people’s faces when they receive assistance. “People appreciate what you do for them. It makes their life a little bit better”, said Noel, emphasizing the importance of supporting and giving back to others.
Receiving the Dempsey Medal has been a tremendous honor for Noel and Eileen, who feel grateful to be recognized for their service. They extend their appreciation to the families who generously donate food, enabling them to provide essential support to those most in need.
